Top Ten Saddest Live-Action Movie Deaths

Description

I thought I'd make a companion meme to my list of saddest animated deaths. This time it's for my saddest live-action movie deaths. I used the template found here.

Note: This meme contains SPOILERS (that should be obvious). Also, as with the animated list, I'm only including characters who STAY dead, so no ET, no Spock, no Gandalf, no Agent Coulson, etc.

#10. Snape (Harry Potter). Long before the last book came out, I predicted that Snape wouldn't make it out alive, but it was still heart-wrenching to see him die both in the book and in the movie. Did you think our favorite harsh Potions master could cry? Well watch Alan Rickman pull that off beautifully. Gah, that's a sign of a great actor.

#9. Boromir (Lord of the Rings). I know it's a bit of a joke that Sean Bean dies all the time, but that doesn't make Boromir's death any less moving. This guy really SUFFERS as he dies (THREE arrows in the chest) and he suffers for a LONG time, but he uses every last bit of his strength trying to protect Merry and Pippin - only to see them kidnapped.

#8. Anakin Skywalker (Star Wars). With or without the prequels, the death of Darth Vader generates genuine compassion from the audience. When the mask comes off both literally and figuratively, we see him for who he used to be . . . only for him to die. Sure, he gets to be a Force ghost afterwards, but that's not the same as what might have been.

#7. Kili (The Hobbit). A lot of people seem to laugh at the Kili/Tauriel love story, but I personally loved it. Let's face it, the dwarves in the book (other than Thorin) don't get a lot of individuality and when Fili and Kili die in the book we barely notice it. In the movie, however, it's downright heartbreaking, especially with Tauriel's reaction. When she cries out, "Take it from me!" I just want to wrap my arms around her and comfort her.

#6. Dobby (Harry Potter). One of the more infamous Potter deaths, this could have just come off as awkward, but fortunately the movie executed it beautifully (although it would have been nice if we had seen Dobby in the other movies after CoS). Dobby spends his last moments in Harry's arms and he's happy to be with his friend as he dies.

#5. Padme Amidala (Star Wars). I always knew she'd HAVE to die in order for the original trilogy to happen, but it still got me when it happened. Yeah yeah, the "lost the will to live" line has been picked apart to death (eh, no pun intended), but aside from that, we really see her emotional torment as she's dying. When it's intercut with Vader being assembled, we can see how they are both dying in a sense. And even at the very end, Padme uses her dying breath to show that she hasn't given up on Anakin. (sobs)

#4. Angel (Rent). GOD, Angel, such an amazing character, a drag queen who's so confident, so appealing, so funny, the glue that holds the group together. Then when he dies, GAH. When Collins sings the song that brought them together at his funeral, the song that was once so happy and now so sad . . . yeah, it pulls out your heart.

#3. Rue (The Hunger Games). Although Rue doesn't get much screen time, her presence is memorable and her death is just plain hard to watch. She's crying as she dies - you can see that she's SCARED of what's about to happen but she knows she can't do anything to stop it. Then when Katniss sings to her . . . I don't care who you are, you're going to cry.

#2. Jean Valijean (Les Miserables). No matter how many times I see the movie or the stage show, I can't keep myself from crying at the end. Even with the implication that he goes to heaven and he's finally at peace after a lifetime of running, I can't keep myself from crying. I don't even really know WHY this death hits me so hard, but it does. Every. Single. Time.

And Number 1 . . .

If you know me in the slightest and you've looked at my DA page lately, I think you can guess Number 1, but it's STILL fucking hard to actually type about it . . .

Okay, Number 1 . . .

#1. Han Solo (Star Wars). This is the only movie death that's legitimately caused me GRIEF. I don't mean "cry in the theater and then go home" - I mean actual fucking GRIEF. I love Han so much that it literally felt like a close friend died. Seriously. I don't even care who thinks I'm insane for that. Maybe I am insane, but all I know is that it's been almost a month since I saw TFA and I'm still depressed. Here, it's not about HOW he died, it's about WHO died. He could have been eaten by Ewoks and I'd still be grieving (although yeah, being killed by his own son adds to the sadness). I know I said I'd only include characters who STAY dead on this list, but if Episode 8 or 9 proved me wrong there, I would be so damn happy. I would never be happier to be wrong, so I'll say again, #SaveHanSolo and sign the petition to bring him back.

May I add: Theoden (LOTR) I cried like a baby when he passed out:cries: Robb and Talisa Stark (Game of Thrones. I know, it's a serie, not a movie^^): the poor girl was pregnant, and she formed a so lovely couple with Robb, full of tenderness and love, which was VERY rare in that show! Neil Perry (Dead Poets Society): the poor kid was force into despair by his own family, so tragic! :cries:
